The top courses in Mario Kart selected by SmartRead
We have been considering Mario Kart's top courses throughout the years, especially with additional circuits arriving to Mario Kart Deluxe 8. There's a lot to choose from, ranging from the heady early days of straightforward throwaway circuits encircled by green walls to the space-age madness of contemporary renditions of Rainbow Road, and we occurred to believe that we're very well positioned to do so.
After careful consideration, we are prepared to present our list of the greatest Mario Kart courses, which includes one that caused a lot of controversy among the SmartRead team. Apparently, we don't discuss about Baby Park.
There are certain ground rules—well, one ground rule—in that we can only include one Rainbow Road occurrence on the list; otherwise, this list consists mostly of the traditional multicolored course. Now that we've cleared it up, let's head to the tracks and start up the old Waluigi Wiggler.
Our editor Ruby has chosen Coconut Mall, one of the circuits included in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe's new feature release, and it makes sense. This track is a true contemporary classic; it's accessible via Mario Kart Wii and gives players the chance to speed around the Mushroom Kingdom mall with abandon. Try this course in an online race if you believe Black Friday is the most chaotic time of year at the mall.
Thank you, Nathan, our resident Mario enthusiast! Nathan selected four courses for this list: Waluigi Pinball, Maple Treeway, DK Mountain, and Delfino Square. Given that most of these tracks have a longer duration than Moo Moo Meadows or Mario Circuit, it's likely clear from this little sampling that Nathan enjoys Mario Kart courses with an epic sense of grandeur.
The most contentious selection on our list comes from staff writer Ben, who chose Baby Park as his favorite, demonstrating an outstanding level of taste. Yes, Baby Park—a difficult pick among the team—the seven-lap circular loop that, more often than not, dissolves into floating mayhem with whirling green and red shells. However, since Baby Park first appeared in Double Dash, it has been in every Mario Kart game, so I believe we already know Nintendo's opinion on it. Ben may finally feel validated.
It needs to be a Rainbow Road, in my view, and Mario Kart 64's version is the best overall. There's something about the interplanetary course's construction that constantly draws me back, even if the technicolor track is now a little more colorful and twisting. Even in the contemporary retelling, the essence of Rainbow Road is evident, compensating for Mario 64's addition of the feared blue shell.
