Samsung wants to be "actively involved" in mobile ray tracing.
Naturally, since we're in Barcelona for MWC 2023, we're talking about Samsung. The Galaxy S23 Ultra, the company's most recent smartphone, debuted earlier this month with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor that has been carefully optimized and can do hardware-based ray tracing. Given that mobile games aren't exactly recognized for their graphics when compared to console or PC gaming, this may sound like a far-fetched idea, but it seems to be feasible. In video games, ray-tracing is a method used to render shadows and light. It monitors and replicates each light beam from a source to produce breathtaking lighting effects on objects like mirrors and water. However, to even get that type of tracking to function, much alone use ray-tracing to play an entire game, you need a really powerful system. Not only is ray-tracing difficult, but it's also challenging when trying to keep other factors, such frame rate, constant. You're going to have a horrible time trying to launch Cyberpunk 2077 at 4K 60 frames per second with ray tracing on anything other than a rocket ship.Although Wonjoon Choi, EVP and Head of Mobile R&D at Samsung, is well aware of the hardware constraints ray-tracing faces, he believes Samsung should take the lead in bringing ray-tracing to mobile gaming. "We don't plan to sit idle and just look at the situation passively," he added during our chat. We have already started working with a few game creators since we want to be actively involved.
"We are offering them optimization support while they develop their games, so you will be able to see the ray-tracing games on the market once this work has matured." Although it's intriguing to know that it's being worked on, we're not sure how long it will take to see a mobile game that can use ray-tracing without crashing or overheating your phone. We're currently on the ground at MWC 2023 in Barcelona, bringing you all the latest news, but we'll bring you more from our conversation with Wonjoon Choi later in the week. In addition to the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, we'll provide you first access to the newest innovations in technology and news.
