The second-biggest animated film ever made is Mario.
It's no secret that Mario loves gold coins, but in his latest movie, the mustachioed plumber and the other Mario characters have really excelled themselves. According to the most recent box office data for Mario, the movie has sold $1.3 billion worth of tickets worldwide.
The Mario film surpassed Frozen's $1.28 billion to become the second-biggest animated film of all time, according to Variety. With a $1.45 billion box office haul, Frozen 2 is the only movie currently ahead of it in the rankings.
Despite receiving negative reviews, the recently released cartoon has broken even more records. It was the third-biggest Easter weekend behind Furious 7 and Batman v. Superman, and it had the greatest opening weekend of any gaming adaptation. With all of this success, it was the largest opening weekend for Illumination, the biggest of the year, and the third-highest for any animation, after the beloved The Lion King and The Incredibles 2. Quite amazing, particularly in light of the negative reviews for the Mario film.d
