Sheltered - Mobile & Nintendo Switch

This match. Heave heave. To put it mildly, you must have the stomach for this one. In the 2D pixelated strategy-survival game Sheltered, your family and you must survive in a nuclear bunker. Unfortunately, everything works against your survival, making any advancement cruelly sluggish. Maintaining your bunker is rewarding but always risky; ultimately, you'll have to explore the wastelands and fight for your life against both people and animals.

Even though it's not the most upbeat game I've ever played, I found myself enjoying the gameplay loop and was eager to keep playing in order to try and live a few more days. When you eventually succeed in a game this difficult, you experience a genuine sense of satisfaction. The micromanagement all works wonderfully once you get the hang of it.

The Walking Dead for Mobile & Nintendo Switch

Telltale's The Walking Dead is an interactive story game with far-reaching repercussions based on the popular comic book and television series. You play as a survivor who must try to dodge reanimated corpses and make friends with the few other live people you contact with after waking up in a world already overrun by zombies.

This is an amazing stressful experience if you're seeking for difficult decisions that you have to make fast. While the TV programme will always have a special place in our hearts, there's something genuinely unique about being engaged in this narrative and knowing that your choices have an impact. It's also supported by excellent writing and acting.

In case you can't get enough of the annoying creatures who eat people's brains, we've also compiled a list of the top zombie games for the Switch and mobile devices.

Nintendo Switch - Nuclear Throne

Nuclear Throne is an intense action rogue-like that resembles a cross between Mad Max and Enter the Gungeon. It has a wide variety of weapons and foes who are all eager to engage in combat for your entertainment. I'm not sure what else will convince you if that doesn't. You may equip yourself with a wide range of incredible weaponry, but beware of adversaries who may use radioactive waste to transform themselves and acquire horrifying new skills in tandem. Nuclear Throne is a much lighter take on the end of the world, but it's still a fun, fast-paced action game with a fulfilling gameplay loop that will have you wanting more.

Redux of Metro 2033 - Nintendo Switch

Metro 2033 Redux is a recreation of the original Metro 2033 that updates its graphics to more closely resemble the sequel Metro: Last Light, based on the book by Dmitry Glukhovsky. The game takes place in a post-nuclear fallout Russia where you are one of the few surviving people living underground in Moscow. Occasionally, you must come outside to deal with the bitter cold and the mutant creatures that are now roaming the city.

Another excellent port, the Switch version, maintains a steady framerate and transfers all the graphics from the already visually stunning PS4/Xbox One versions, offering some thrilling first-person shooter action set in a survival at all costs narrative.

FAR: Lone Sails - Mobile & Nintendo Switch

Following the release of the sequel, I just purchased this game during a deal, and I'm very glad I did. A brief, contemplative encounter mostly reliant on nonverbal narrative, FAR: In the game Changing Tides, a little character's only goal is to go from one location to another. You give the order to transport a massive wheeled vehicle over the deserted plains of Earth, propelled only by wind and your meagre energy reserves.

Few games are able to achieve the beautiful sensation of flow that comes from staying on top of the ship's many mechanics and travelling smoothly. Granted, there are a few challenging riddles and challenges scattered throughout, but after around five or six hours of play, I was completely engrossed in this little universe.

Nintendo Switch version of Shin Megami Tensei V While there are grim themes in all of the series' entries, Shin Megami Tensei V really amps up the sense of doomsday. The most recent game in the Shin Megami Tensei series is a harsh role-playing game that demands you to work hard for your win. It was revealed for the Switch before the device was even ready, but the wait was well worth it. In a battle between angels and demons, you take on the role of Nahobino, a schoolboy who is drawn into an other realm and merged with a demon to become the only person able to save the planet. If you think it sounds crazy, that's not even close to it. SMTV openly embraces its sillier aspects while still delivering gripping narrative beats. The series' most intricate and sophisticated monster-capturing and role-playing gameplay to date, and the game's stunning design is clearly the result of extensive development time.
