Review of Puyo Puyo Tetris 2: hours of mind-boggling delight
Our Verdict
Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 surpasses the original with a fun light-hearted story. Though slightly repetitive at times, returning fans will find more of the same casual puzzling fun
As the name implies, Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 is a game that mixes the jelly-matching puzzle Puyo Puyo with the block-matching puzzle Tetris. In contrast to the conventional iterations of Tetris and Puyo Puyo, this game has an array of modes, each with unique learning curves and difficulty adjustments. Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 effectively blends both puzzle genres, with foes hurling objects at your well built wall and more blocks falling dependent on your opponent's progress.
Along with a variety of game types to keep you occupied, the game has a lighthearted story—well, as lighthearted as it can get when a pretty anime girl is trying to destroy the world—and a catchy music that will linger in your brain long after you've done playing. Unfortunately, I discovered that after a few hours of play, the gameplay did become a little monotonous, but devoted Fans of Puyo Puyo or Tetris may not find this problematic.
I really like that the adventure mode has a lively, visual novel-style and that all of the conversation is completely spoken, since I have played a lot of visual novels that lack voice acting. The tale revolves on Ringo and Tee, two friends who have to band together to rescue their different planets, much as in the original Puyo Puyo Tetris game. You must dedicate several hours to the adventure mode in order to complete the tale, since each level alternates between conversation and a game of Tetris or Puyo Puyo.
You may play against up to four bots in different matchups in solo mode. Having the option to play on a Tetris board or a Puyo Puyo in every mode—regardless of whether it was the same as my opponents'—was something I really valued since Tetris is my favorite kind of games. The fast-paced Big Bang solo mode is my favorite as it allows players to solve very simple problems at breakneck speed.
Similar mechanics apply to the multiplayer mode, which naturally features actual players as opposed to bots. You may compete over local wifi or play on a single screen with your pals. You may play in the online mode as well to get into the worldwide rankings. You could be ready to put your console down after a few hours if you don't feel like playing with friends or online despite the fact that there are a lot of various gaming types.
The game has some really thorough tutorials that cover every subject and challenge you can think of for those who are new to Tetris or Puyo Puyo. Thus, even those who are hesitant to start playing the puzzle classic for the first time will soon become proficient.
As you play, you'll discover additional levels, music, and even more lovely characters, which is quite enjoyable. Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 is a great option for anybody searching for a quick puzzle game they can pick up and play for a few rounds.
