With every new game release, the list of Pokémon regions expands, allowing us to go on new adventures with our friends all around the globe. There are many fascinating places to discover and talk about, ranging from the well-known Kanto region to brand-new locales like Scarlet and Violet's Spanish-inspired Paldea.
We haven't even begun to fully explore the vast Pokémon universe. After this, why not check out our lists of the top Pokémon games for fish Pokémon, dragon Pokémon, or Pokémon games? In addition, our flower Pokémon guide will let you pause and smell the flowers. Learn more about the new Pokémon game that's pulling us back to Kalos. With the help of our map of the many Pokémon locales, let's go on an expedition.
Kanto is the scene for our very first Pokémon journey (as well as a few remakes), and it's a very memorable place. All of the original
gen 1 Pokémon also call it home! Even if I may spend more time in Kanto than with my mother, the area still has a lot of charm and charmingly beautiful designs, such as Lavender Town, the S.S. Anne, and the well-known Cinnabar Island. Players begin at Pallet Town since most towns in Kanto get their names from colors.Players first encounter Professor Oak in Kanto. If you continued on to play Pokémon Gold, Silver, or Crystal, you may now explore the original Kanto as a post-game bonus after finishing Johto, all due to the amazing programming of the late Satoru Iwata.
Johto
Johto, the Pokémon! It's true that we all live in a Pokémon universe; this was particularly true in the late 1990s, at the height of the Pokémania. Following Red, Blue, Green, and Yellow's phenomenal success, fans were eager to see what would happen next. Well, young gamers got to see Professor Elm, the Johto area, and its Pokémon in Pokémon Gold, Silver, and finally Crystal. With a few really memorable locations like the Unown ruins, the Slowpoke well, and the Lake of Rage—where many encounter their first shiny Pokémon in the shape of the amazing crimson Gyrados—all the efforts put into making Kanto distinctive are amplified. Since many adult humans still suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder as a result of encountering the cow Pokémon Miltank, the trainers and Pokémon are equally remembered. Johto is really precious to me since we even got to play the area again in the
best Pokémon games, HeartGold and SoulSilver.
Hoenn
Hoenn, the area that debuted with the
gen 3 Pokémon, is a major jump in terms of visuals and substance from prior generations. It was the first game on the GameBoy Advance, Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire, and finally Emerald. This brings life to the sunny, beach-filled area of Hoenn, and a large number of new Pokémon, including as the chameleon Pokémon Kecleon and the sometimes overlooked but nevertheless incredible big tree dinosaur known as Tropius, capitalize on this tropical vibe. With Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, players are able to return to the Hoenn area, where evil groups known as Team Magma and Team Aqua are once more attempting to exploit the power of legendary Pokémon Groudon and Kyogre, respectively, to take over the world via fire and water. With so much dramatic weather, Hoenn constantly seems like it's in the midst of an environmental event, which further heightens the sense of aliveness in this place.
Hisui/Sinnoh
We're switching gears once again, this time hopping onto the Nintendo DS to play Pokémon Diamond and Pearl. The Sinnoh area, which returns to the rural and mountainous origins of Japan and introduces us to the handsome Professor Rowan, isn't nearly as sun-drenched as Hoenn. The area itself has its own surprises up its sleeve, even if Diamond and Pearl brought new evolutions to older Pokémon, the touch-screen, and the amazing legendaries Dialga and Palkia.Pokémon Legends: Arceus, released in 2022, allows players to experience the Pokémon world from a bygone era when exploration was still being done and early communities were starting to take on the characteristics of the beloved towns we know today. It was formerly called the Hisui area before being dubbed the Sinnoh region. In reality, this region had Pokémon forms that we had never seen before, such as the cute Growlithe from Hisuin and Arcanine, which is a dual-type Pokémon with both fire and rock. Hopefully, in the future, we will be able to investigate additional Pokémon locations using this perspective. Celebi in Pokemon Legends, am I right?Unova
Unova is the first Pokémon mainstream territory to be heavily influenced by New York and other parts of the United States, and this marks a considerable shift from prior generations. Game Freak perfected the Pokémon engine while the game was still on the DS, resulting in Black and White's visuals seeming to be noticeably better than Diamond and Pearl's.The
gen 5 Pokémon are brought to life by the moving sprites, but the quasi-3D elements—such as Castelia City's stunning architecture—really stand out. Due to the fact that Pokémon Black and White was initially intended to be a gentle reinvention of the Pokémon franchise, Unova has a large number of brand-new Pokémon in addition to species that play the parts of beloved classic Pokémon like Woobat, Alomalora, and Bouffalant.Seasons are another new concept added in Pokémon Black and White. Deerling and Sawsbuck, two deer-themed Pokémon, even alter their appearance according on the season you catch them in. This enhances the games' pleasant feeling of growth and builds upon the day-and-night cycle that players are already familiar with from Gold and Silver. After the recent revival of the fourth generation with Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, Unova is most likely the next region to see a remake. I really hope that this ambitious and stunning area is fully realized, and that any remake is more along the lines of Pokémon Black 2 and White 2. In summary, they are supreme. With the inclusion of the Unovan Blueberry Academy in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet's Indigo Disk DLC, the game may be hinting to a possible return to Unova in the near future—either in a new title or a gen five remake. Located primarily underwater and off the coast of Unova, this school has a specially designed Terarium with four different biomes that host a wide variety of Pokémon from all over the globe.
Kalos
Even if Pokémon X and Y are among the least enjoyable games ever, at least the area of Kalos, which is modeled by France, still makes us happy with its stunning towns with traditional architecture, the Lumiose City tower, and of course, the arrival of Mega Evolution. I usually like playing through the first game in the series on the 3DS, even if it has flaws since Kalos is at least a lovely area to get lost in.Even with fewer new additions, Kalos still has an amazing Pokémon lineup, and any generation that provides me Hawlucha can't be all that horrible, can it?The area also introduces us to Professor Sycamore, who is by all accounts an absolute hottie. We just learned that a new Pokémon Legends game in 2025 will take us back to Kalos, or more precisely, Lumiose City. The community for Pokémon Legends: Z-A is still left with more questions than answers, but we are eager to experiment with Mega Evolution once again. Watch this space for an official
Pokémon Legends: Z-A release date announcement in the near future.
Alola
I really do mean it when I say that Pokémon Sun and Moon rekindled my love for the franchise. I was exhausted by X and Y, but Alola, with its stunning beaches, lush forests, and the incredible new potential of localized Pokémon like Exeggutor, pulled me back in. The fact that the phrases Alola and Aloha are similar may have already given you some idea of the fact that Alola is located in Hawaii.Alola also introduced us to the previously mentioned regional forms and the buff nerd who doubles as a masked wrestler, Professor Kukui. It's brilliant to see iconic Pokémon like Raichu, Sandshrew, and Vulpix adapting to a new habitat; this is one of the few tricks that Game Freak hasn't abandoned over the years. All of this contributes to Alola's sense of adventure and separation from reality, which is why it's still one of my favorite places.
Galar
Look, I believe it's reasonable to expect a great deal of enthusiasm from a lifetime Pokémon enthusiast when you tell him that the next generation will be based on his own Britain. The region of Galar is introduced in Pokémon Sword and Shield, drawing inspiration from Scotland, Ireland, Wales, and even the Isle of Man (the United Kingdom), in addition to England. Seeing a virtual simulation of the Roman Baths, which are located quite close to the real SmartRead offices, while playing a Pokémon game seems a little strange.Pokémon Sword and Shield has a lot of problems (boring tale, straight upward advancement, a few dumb'mons), but the DLC makes a huge improvement. The Crown Tundra and the Isle of Armor—I believe it's really impolite to model a region on Britain and then spell armor incorrectly—provide some much-needed diversity to the game's scenery and gameplay. One interesting idea in Pokémon Sword and Shield is the Wild Area. Players may wander across a vast arena in this open world, catch Pokémon, and even use the camera for the first time. While the Dynamax Raids and this are all fantastic, the DLC refined and enhanced both of them. The Crown Tundra offers us a stunningly picturesque winter environment to explore, more incredible raid encounters, and the introduction of the Galarian forms of Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres. You may now find salvation, Pokémon Sword and Shield.
Paldea
The Pokémon train never stops, and while some people believed it could be too soon for a new generation, Game Freak revealed earlier this year that generation nine, which takes place in the Paldea area and is modeled in Spain, is on its way. Paldea has the expansive plains of a nation like Spain together with the stunning colorful architecture emphasizing mingling and sharing food as you can find in towns like Barcelona or Valencia, whereas Alola is sunny and covered with rainforests. We've fallen in love with Paldea after finally having the chance to explore it for ourselves, as well as the Pokemon Professors Sada and Turo, depending on whether you purchase Pokémon Scarlet or Violet. The Pokémon professors' decision to focus on one extreme of the pendulum, together with the futuristic design of Miraidon and the traditional design of Koraidon, demonstrate how Game Freak is presenting a genuine conflict between the past and the future with these entries. Our
Pokemon Scarlet and Violet paradox Pokémon guide has further more information about this.Paldea is a large, open area with Area Zero, a massive crater, in the middle. This seems to be the root of many of the enigmatic events that take place in the area, such as the many occasions when enormous giant Pokémon terrorize their surroundings. As you go on your journey with your riding Pokémon, there are several things to discover, like vast, cold mountains to explore, rivers and lakes to sail, and much more.Kitakami
This little inland area, simply referred to as "the land of Kitakami," is the destination of your class trip in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet's Teal Mask DLC. The summer festival you visit as part of the main plot is one of the many rural Japanese villages that inspired the architecture and culture.According to u/Alevani's Reddit theory, Kitakami is located far further from Paldea than the first leaks indicated. This is in line with the location of the Japanese town of the same name! Rather, the terastal phenomenon—which originates at the Crystal Pool atop Kitakami's mountain—is what unites the two areas. You can read our guides on
