The Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Zonai: Who Are They?
During Breath of the Wild, the Zonai tribe, an ancient civilization, was wiped off. Even though the tribe's members have long since vanished, their influence may still be seen in the Zonai ruins and other buildings scattered over the map that are based on their distinctive dragon insignia.
Although there aren't many explicit allusions to the Zonai, there are descriptions of the extinct race in a number of objects and places. For instance, the three components of the Barbarian armor set are located in the middle of each of BotW's three labyrinths, suggesting that the tribe was responsible for building these enormous structures. Every item of armor has an increased attack and is described as belonging to "an ancient warlike tribe from the Faron region." This suggests that the Zonai were fighters wearing armor like that of the Barbarian set.
The water dragon that appears on the Zonai crest is also seen in many of the Zonai ruins located in the Faron area. A triforce symbol is also etched in the ruins, implying that the Zonai are connected to it and may be capable of using magic. With each animal connected to each triangle of the triforce, the race also has a close bond with animals. Boars stand for strength, owls for wisdom, and dragons for bravery.
Is the Shiekah connected to Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Zonai?
Based on their geographical location and the textual descriptions seen in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, it seems probable that the Zonai and the Shiekah are two distinct tribes. But it seems that each had distinct ways of getting at the triforce and magic.
Though there isn't much that links the two, we do know that the Zonai constructed the three labyrinths to test the might of warriors, and we know that the Shiekah erected the shrines. The presence of shrines inside each labyrinth suggests that the two tribes collaborated, suggesting that the two races may have fought Calamity Ganon together in the distant past.
