spirittea character approaching a cabin in the woods

Earth Spirit

Spirittea is a sweet, small-town role-playing game that expertly combines aspects of business and living sims, giving off a kind of Stardew Valley meets Studio Ghibli atmosphere. In this really touching and enchanted game, you assume the character of a fantasy writer who relocates to an ancient mansion in a secluded rural village in the hopes of finding inspiration for your next work.

When you take a taste of Spirittea and realize you can see spirits, however, you definitely get more than you bargained for. Together with Wonyan, a fabulously feisty ghost cat, you must assist your new neighbors—both alive and nonliving—by resolving their problems and bringing the former bath house for spirits back to its former splendor.

The gameplay loop revolves on a rather relaxed setting with little puzzles and tasks to complete, goods to gather and purchase, and a bathhouse to operate, all of which manage to feel both familiar and new at the same time. It's quite endearing, and it's impressive how much effort the one-man game developer The Cheese Master Games is putting into future content and problem repairs. To learn more about this small treasure, be sure to read our Spirittea review in the interim.

Describe snug games.

Cozy games are difficult to categorize as they rely solely on the emotions and vibes that each player experiences. For example, Joel of Vinsauce definitely disagrees with the general consensus that Signal Simulator and Voices from the Void are comfortable. In a similar vein, despite all the action (and sometimes horror), I find Far Cry 5, the Resident Evil games, and The Witcher games cozy because they're well-known to me and I associate them with pleasant memories. However, when people speak about "cozy" or "hygge" games, they usually mean a certain kind. This genre includes puzzle, construction, farming, adventure, and general life simulation games. These games are often characterized by calm color schemes, calming soundtracks, and an absence of tension or danger. Though they do sometimes emerge, time limitations and fighting are seldom the major emphasis. On the other hand, the main characteristics of a cozy game are its simple gameplay and enjoyable, soothing atmosphere. The Cheese Master Games write in this Twitter thread, "I hope that playing Spirittea brings a feeling of comfort to whatever life you lead." In the same way, concept artist Iona Vorster says in our 2022 Wylde Flowers interview that "creating a relaxing and welcoming, friendly world was one of [the Studio Dryrock team's] key goals," as they "wanted a place for players to feel safe." "Of course, I hope you all find the game fun, but my other goal was to make it feel like a little place you can escape to when you need a break from a busy day, month, or year."These two quotations, in our opinion, sum up what a pleasant game is exactly. It's escape from the real world, a warm and inviting place that you may come to when things get too much to handle. We all need a little downtime from time to time, which is why they are so unique and appealing to such a broad audience.

Why are cuddly games becoming so well-liked these days?

It's indisputable that the popularity of cozy games has skyrocketed in recent years, with new releases occurring almost every week and whole online communities forming around clean and cozy games. Why now, then? Of course, there are many contributing factors: games like Stardew Valley sweeping the globe by storm, social media enabling the amplification of games outside of the mainstream, and more. The internet allows more independent creators to try their hand at developing the games they want to see. But we believe that the aforementioned escapism is the main factor for the growing appeal of cozy games.People's primary motivation for immersing oneself in video games has always been escapism. Gaming is more complicated than watching TV, listening to music, or reading a book as it combines all of these activities into one and relies on visual, aural, and physical stimulation. While other mediums can have their immersion broken by tinkering with your phone, chatting, or staring at the wall for ten minutes as you fall into a pit of existential despair, the higher level of engagement puts you right in the middle of the experience, requiring more focus and taking your mind off the real world completely (or at least, in our experience). In addition, there has been a noticeable rise in desire for escapism outside of the typical gaming niche in the last several years owing to the pandemic, the cost of living problem, political unrest, and other factors that have raised stress levels. It's no longer just us geeks playing our favorite MMO or the greatest role-playing games or . People who are brand-new to gaming are picking up controllers, installing apps on their phones, or typing away at keyboards to escape the busy world and strains of their daily life.As a result, games with straightforward gameplay mechanics, soothing settings, eye-catching color schemes, appealing graphics, and opportunities for personal expression have established themselves as industry standards. There are also more alternatives to choose than ever before thanks to the corresponding surge in independent games and platforms that allow fresh creative teams to try their hand at sharing the enchantment. That concludes our list of the most comfortable games you can play right now. Take a seat, relax, and enjoy the laid-back atmosphere.
