Playable and nonplayable characters from Nier Automata

A few playthroughs are required to unlock all of the mysteries in Nier Automata, making it a unique game. It may be a bit challenging to stay on top of things, so let's address that. We will discuss not just the primary playable Nier Automata characters, but also the many allies, adversaries, and non-playable characters you encounter along this amazing journey. Though they are few in number, each one has a distinct effect, particularly after you've seen the world from three distinct angles.

Characters from Nier Automata that can be played

2B from Nier Automata, a female android in a short black dress with short white hair and a blindfold. Her back is to us. She is looking at a giant, oil rig-like mechanical beast, fire spurting off pipes on its back.

2B

The protagonist of Nier Automata, 2B, is a visual showcase for the game's style via her character design, a variety of flashy movements to introduce you to the environment, and a secret emotional depth that becomes apparent after around twelve hours of play. You can learn all there is to know about this pivotal character in our Nier Automata 2B guide.

9S and 2B walking through a dilapidated mall in Nier Automata. There is moss growing one things, they look calm, and a pod is floating above each of their heads (Pods are like drones but boxier).

9S

9S is the protagonist of your second game after first being a sidekick. Despite their tendency towards simplification, they have a more inquisitive disposition. Their inability to strike a balance between being sweet and rebellious sometimes makes them irritate their bosses as well. Our Nier Automata 9S guide has all the information you need to learn about him.

A2

Although A2 is initially antagonistic towards you, by the third game, you have become her. She is the most ferocious of the three, actually yelling at her own pod in a humorous way, but she does eventually soften. These robots indeed have hearts, just like every other playable Nier Automata character. See our Nier Automata A2 guide for additional information.

Pascal

Pascal is the leader of a hamlet populated by non-networked machines. Despite their initial scepticism, the androids are helpful to him and are friendly. Don't get too connected to Pascal since he's just a playable character in branch C for a little period of time.

Art for Nier Automata showing 2B - a female android in a short black dress and heels with short white hair over blindfolded eyes - and her pod - like a boxy drone thing - looking at a dilapidated factory. In the foreground is some dying grass. The factory in the distance has plants growing over it.
