SmartRead opinions on Birdo's sex in Mario
Though he began as a straightforward antagonistic non-player character in Super Mario Bros. 2, Birdo has evolved into one of the most recognizable figures in the Mario universe. She first appeared as a playable character in many side series games, including Mario Party, Mario Tennis, and Mario Kart. As a result, many Nintendo fans have grown up knowing her.She is, nevertheless, recognized as one of the first transgender gaming characters ever, something that some people may not be aware of. All of this started when Birdo was described as "thinking he is a girl and likes to be called Birdetta" in the Super Mario Bros. 2 hardcopy handbook.Since then, Birdo has almost always been identified as female, with the odd exception—such as when 'it' pronouns were used in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. The general consensus among fans is that Birdo is a woman, and transgender admirers in particular have claimed her as their own. In spite of everything, Nintendo hasn't formally confirmed anything to us. Fans are debating what Nintendo should announce regarding Birdo's identity based on a Reddit poll. The fact that Birdo, like Yoshi, is theoretically a whole species in the Mario world only serves to further complicate matters. We're not sure why each unique character has to have the same name as their whole species. And there you have it, then. Although we at SmartRead concur that Birdo is a trans symbol, you are free to disagree with us until we issue an official declaration.
