Switch
- Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive AgeAlthough Switch enthusiasts had to wait a long for it, the wait was well worth it. Echoes of an Elusive Age contains everything a player might want from a Dragon Quest game: interesting characters, hard fights, a fighting system that allows for some creative licence, and a vibrant, vibrant setting full of life.If you can put up with the combat theme being the same for the most of that time, it's also quite an epic, with over fifty hours of material. P.S. It's well worth staying for the post-game festivities.
Switch for Ni No Kuni 2: Revenant Kingdom
Ni No Kuni 2 is a JRPG unlike any other in terms of pure beauty, its vibrant Ghibli-inspired world radiating from every angle. Even better, the fighting system isn't too horrible, with redesigned first-game features that give you a bit more manoeuvrability and subtlety in combat. In addition to being a JRPG, Revenant Kingdom also functions as a kind of town-builder, giving the kidnapped youngster the job of creating a new kingdom. Although it's not an easy task, someone has to do it.
Final Fantasy IX - Mobile and Switch
Although it's ancient, this song is so very wonderful. There are several alternatives available here since Square brought a sizable amount of their Final Fantasy catalogue to the Switch, but my personal favourite is the ninth game in the series because of its well-known shift from science fiction to fantasy.Final Fantasy IX is one of the most existential experiences from the long-running series, with lots of emotional depth in the ambitious plot, even with its delightful cast of characters, like Quen and Vivi.
Switch, Persona 5 Royal
Persona 5, a masterwork in story, fighting mechanics, character design, and well, pretty much everything it does, is hailed as one of the greatest JRPGs ever, let alone only on the Switch. It should come as no surprise, therefore, that our
Persona 5 Royal review gave the game a 9/10, complimenting the graphics, narrative, and astute changes to the combat system. Even though Persona 3 and 4 are now available on the Nintendo Switch, if you want the full Persona experience, start with the fifth game in the series.Check out some of our guides when you finally decide to enter the Persona world. If you need something to watch while playing handheld, we have sections on
Persona 5 characters,
Persona 5 Ann,
Persona 5 Futaba,
Persona 5 Joker, and the
Persona 5 anime.
Mobile Chrono Trigger
Being a classic, Chrono Trigger is well worth its place on our list. Even while it may seem a bit simple by modern JRPG standards, this one has it all—a gripping story, well-thought-out combat, and likeable characters.Nevertheless, I think that Chrono Trigger's stunning pixelated graphics are its greatest feature. Like many JRPG fans, it's exactly the kind of world you want to return to, and it will undoubtedly be remembered as one of the greatest and most influential in the genre's history. It's similar to completing your study on gaming history when you play this one, but it's more enjoyable.
Traveller Octopath - Switch
JRPGS' ensemble casts and their entwined tales sometimes resemble Hollywood epics, with the main plot shifting you between characters at irregular intervals. This is never more evident than in Octopath Traveller, where eight characters work together to create a single, cohesive tale that, in our opinion, is the closest thing to a great Game of Thrones game that will ever be released. This game, with each pixel exploding off the screen, is also the epitome of what a magnificent 2D-HD title can look like. Even better, a sequel with a more expansive fantasy story and captivating characters has been released. Look no further if you like epic tales and vintage role-playing games.
Xenoblade Chronicles 3 - SwitchThe Xenoblade Chronicles series has had a great run throughout the Switch period, with the popularity of the system allowing the games to really come into their own with a wider audience. Seven years later, if you were unaware of Xenoblade, you most likely are now. However, Xenoblade Chronicles 3, the enormous third game in the series, is unquestionably the best. It is filled with incredible mech combat, mind-blowing storyline over a large gaming universe, and lots more action-packed battles. See our
Xenoblade Chronicles 3 review for further information.
Honkai Star Rail - mobileNow, because Honkai Star Rail was created by Chinese creators, it isn't really a JRPG, but it plays a lot like one. You don't get much more JRPG than HSR with its grand narrative arc, challenging turn-based combat, and extensive cast of playable characters, therefore we believe it merits a place on our list. Not only is the gameplay amazing, but the graphics are also rather amazing for a smartphone game. It is quite a beautiful game, from the star rail itself to the planets you visit, so it is understandable why gacha and RPG enthusiasts like it so much.Check out our
Honkai Star Rail tier list and
Honkai Star Rail codes guide if you need a little assistance getting started.
Shin Megami Tensei V - SwitchAfter years of worries that the Shin Megami Tensei series was over, the fifth entry in the series came as if by surprise, shocking and delighting franchise devotees. You spend your time between Tokyo and the Netherworld in Shin Megami Tensei V, where a plethora of both new and returning demons are eager to join forces and battle with you.The new feature in the fifth game is the ability to merge demons, which opens up a lot of strong and effective options among the collection of repulsive ghouls. Check out our
Shin Megami Tensei V review to discover whether you're up to the challenge.
Switch
Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of RuinMonster Hunter Stories 2, which substitutes a Pokémon-style turn-based role-playing game mechanism for the action, is a delightful diversion from the monotonous 40-minute confrontations against massive opponents. Regular Monster Hunter is fantastic, although it may be a little daunting at times.Although the monsters in Wings of Ruin are still somewhat large, the fighting system has been improved to allow for some strategic thinking, so although the encounters are not as drawn out, you still have access to a vast and breathtaking landscape to explore while searching for additional beasties. Check out our review of Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin if that seems like fun.
Pokémon Legends: Arceus - SwitchWith a vast universe of legendary and reinvented monsters just waiting to be captured in one of your vintage Pokéballs, Pokémon Legends: Arceus delivers something new and distinct from the main Pokémon franchise. It's also one of the most visually stunning Pokémon games, with a style that we hope will reappear in later Legends titles. While the number of fights may not be as high as in the main series, the ones that are available to you are still rather difficult, and acquiring and training Pokémon has never been more enjoyable. If you're not persuaded, read our
Pokémon Legends: Arceus review.
Live A Live – Switch
Fans of the genre should definitely play the Live-A-Live remake, a turn-based journey through time based on one of Square's most classic RPGS. Though we refer to many games as "classics," this one is really deserving of the moniker. There's a tonne of variation in level and character design to keep things new, and the constant battle keeps you interested through every period. Separate plots span the time from the birth of man to the far future. Check out our
Live A Live review for additional information.
Atelier Ryza 2 - Secret Fairy & Lost Legends - Switch
There has never been a greater alchemical world in Atelier than in Lost Legends & the Hidden Fairy. Three years after the events of the previous game, Ryza is engaged in a potentially catastrophic struggle with the creatures of the Underworld. Our review of Atelier Ryza 2: Lost Legends & the Secret Fairy gives it a 9/10 because of how much the sequel improves upon the creation and combat features of its predecessor. Future Atelier Ryza releases are already something we're anticipating.
Switch: Unicorn Overlord
Though it comes from a Japanese developer and has RPG elements, we're kind of stretching the definition of what constitutes a JRPG here, so bear with us. A very captivating game, Unicorn Overlord offers the kind of experience we imagined back in the heady days of the Nintendo Game Boy Advance period by fusing classic graphics with contemporary graphics. The strategic fighting offered here is nearly certain to please fans of the Fire Emblem series, and the character design is just as amazing as that of the previous series. We assure you, it's worth looking into. Here is our extensive compilation of the top JRPGs on Switch and mobile devices. Check out our guides to the
